Future Flux Festival

Future Flux Festival is a new festival in the historic submarine wharf of Rotterdam. This spacious and atmospheric venue has a rich industrial history and is rapidly evolving into a prominent site where industry, creativity and innovation converge. The festival is a platform for new developments in the fields of technology, art and innovation. I’m excited to be involved with the festival as curator of the Playground.

In the Playground we invite you to make, hack, and create, led by our international group of artists and makers. Unlike a regular art exhibition or industry trade show, you will be confronted with many opportunities to get your hands dirty and participate. You can make a loudspeaker, a fake bomb detector, mobile phone noise music, and learn how to protect yourself from data leaks. We’re hosting the European premiere of Garnet Hertz’s new zine, Disobedient Electronics, and you can bring your own records to be played by James Auger’s turntable powered only by gravity. We’re also proud to debut brand new work by Georgina Voss, as well as exhibit the Osmo dome by Loop, and Parallel Suspended, a robot which makes large-scale drawings with sand by Gijs van Bon.

There’s also a day devoted to industry with some great keynotes such as Scott Smith and Maria Yablonina, and the FabCity programme where you can explore sustainability and food in the urban context, a music programme, and much more — see you at the Festival!

My FutureEverything 2011 picks

I’m gutted that I’ll be missing FutureEverything in Manchester next week (11-14 May). For the lucky ones going, I thought I’d highlight the things I’d be bee-lining to if I was there.

OK well hang on, for those of you who have just tuned in, let me back up and say what FutureEverything is: an annual four day extravaganza of live music, art premieres, inspiring talks, club nights and events. In short, Fun with a capital F, but you can also sell it to your bosses as professional development and get them to send you.

On to this year’s programme! I wouldn’t miss talks by Sally Fort, Keri Facer, Chris Speed, Ela Kagel, Juha van ‘t Zelfde, and Kars Alfrink. (More info on the conference here). I’d be sure to check out the Steve Reich and Warpaint gigs, and would also be spotted at the ultra-intriguing Handmade event, a day devoted to contemporary craft, digital hacking, and DIY culture. In fact digital craft and maker communities seem to play a big role in the programming this year, which I think is great.

Anyway. Sigh — I can’t go. Hope you’ll be blogging and tweeting madly so I can have a taste of the experience.

A Report from Repair

Meet ASIMO in Deep Space Rhizome has just published my report from the most recent Ars Electronica festival, with the theme of “Repair”, in Linz, Austria. There was one point I couldn’t find an elegant way of making in the article itself, but I’ll make it here: the conference programme was quite lacking in diversity, which is difficult to pardon in this day and age (2010, ferchrissake). Anyway, check out the diversity-rant-free piece on Rhizome.

xxxboîte launch

If I was in Montreal tomorrow, I would certainly be going to this launch! It’s an event to celebrate the release of xxxboîte, a collection of critical writing and a DVD compilation of works celebrating the last 10 years of Montreal’s own new media and network arts centre for women – Studio XX.

First, the details:

Kick off the 2007 HTMlles festival with a toast to the community that made it all happen. New texts from one of the four founding mothers, Kim Sawchuk, as well as extraordinary artists, Anna Friz, J.R. Carpenter, Michelle Kasprzak, and Marie-Christine Mathieu, and a DVD compilation that is part humourous, part touching, and all guerilla girl action – a true portrait of Studio XX!

Next, the reminiscing: I knew of XX for a long time, but my first real interaction with it was being invited to participate in one of their excellent Femmes Branchées events in 2003. That particular event was themed “Home“, and I presented my interactive piece Scrub, which explores eroticism and domesticity. Dr Perla Serfaty-Garzon was a perfect foil to my comedic performance (complete with featherduster and rubber gloves) in a housewife persona. Shortly thereafter I moved to Montreal, and became the Studio’s technician for a while, as well as being involved in several projects and participating on the programming committee. I have so many happy memories around the Studio and all the people that make up the XX community, which makes it a real honour to take part in xxxboîte and the 10th anniversary.
